Overview

Liyas Thomas started Hoppscotch in 2019 as a web API client after finding Electron desktop suites sluggish for quick debugging on modest hardware. Originally named Postwoman, the project grew into an open-source API ecosystem spanning web, desktop, and terminal interfaces. Today, it provides engineering teams with a fast testing platform that runs in browsers or private infrastructure without proprietary cloud lock-in.

Why Hoppscotch instead of Postman

Postman has accumulated layers of enterprise features, resulting in an Electron client with high memory usage and interface latency during routine request dispatching. Hoppscotch addresses this overhead by prioritizing execution speed across its client lineup. The desktop application relies on Tauri rather than Electron, maintaining a low memory footprint and quick startup, while the web client loads instantly through Service Workers. Engineers can configure headers, dispatch calls, and inspect response bodies with sub-second feedback, bypassing splash screens and synchronization pauses common in proprietary suites.

For DevOps engineers managing test pipelines, performance advantages carry over to continuous integration. The headless Hoppscotch CLI executes collection runs with minimal container overhead, avoiding runner quotas and token licensing constraints of Postman's cloud platform. Hoppscotch matches Postman across core testing workflows, including environment variables, pre-request scripts, JavaScript assertions, and collection runners. The main trade-off is specialized enterprise tooling: Postman includes native gRPC schema parsing and hosted mock servers, whereas Hoppscotch focuses on speed across REST, GraphQL, WebSocket, Socket.IO, SSE, and MQTT. Built-in collection importers ensure straightforward migration.

What it does well
