Overview
A platform engineer researching incident post-mortems across terminal windows and browser tabs needs a central place to store links without relying on commercial cloud accounts. Shiori provides a lightweight, self-hosted bookmark vault that runs as a standalone Go binary with both a command-line client and a clean web dashboard. It captures the raw URL, extracts readable article text, and stores an offline copy directly on local disk.
Why Shiori instead of Pinboard
Pinboard established the blueprint for fast, minimalist link archiving, but it remains a proprietary hosted service that charges an ongoing fee for full-text caching. For developers and operations teams whose daily work happens inside shell environments and private networks, relying on an external SaaS endpoint introduces external dependencies and privacy questions. Shiori matches Pinboard's tag-based taxonomy and bookmarking speed while keeping all database records and cached articles inside your private infrastructure.
The tradeoff centers on operational scope and workflow integration. Pinboard provides a zero-maintenance hosted setup with a global public feed, but it lacks an official terminal interface and requires third-party utilities for local scripting. Shiori approaches this differently by treating the command line as a primary interface alongside its web UI. Because Shiori supports standard Netscape bookmark imports, migrating an existing library away from Pinboard or Pocket takes only a single file export, though you assume responsibility for database backups and server availability.
What it does well
- Single static Go binary distribution that deploys onto bare-metal hosts, virtual machines, or container runtimes without external language runtimes.
- Dual CLI and web interfaces, giving terminal users fast command-line commands to bookmark and search links while offering an interface for desktop browsing.
- Flexible database engine support covering SQLite by default alongside PostgreSQL and MySQL or MariaDB for team environments.
- Offline content archiving via an embedded Go port of Mozilla's readability algorithm, preserving clean article text and stripped HTML locally.
- Standard Netscape and Pocket format import and export, simplifying link ingestion and automated archival backups.
- First-party browser extensions for Firefox and Chrome that submit URLs directly to your private server without passing telemetry through external intermediaries.
