Overview
Jakob Borg created Syncthing in late 2013 to provide an open, decentralized synchronization protocol free from third-party cloud servers. Today, that origin means the application coordinates continuous file transfers directly between personal computers and phones without account registries or hosted storage limits. Personal files move across trusted hardware over encrypted connections while preserving privacy and data ownership.
Why Syncthing instead of Dropbox
The core workflow difference between Syncthing and Dropbox centers on where data lives. Dropbox relies on centralized cloud hosting: files upload to remote servers before syncing to another machine, enabling web access even when your primary computer is off. Syncthing replaces that cloud intermediary with direct peer-to-peer transmission. It connects your laptops, desktops, and Android phones using cryptographic device IDs, keeping documents entirely within your private hardware. Because no third party hosts the data, there are no subscription fees, file size restrictions, or cloud quotas.
Transitioning to Syncthing requires adapting to this decentralized model. Without a central server, synchronization occurs only when both the sending and receiving devices are powered on and connected simultaneously.
